Cosy Homes grew out of a desire to pool the existing resources of organisations working on improving housing, and to work more effectively to make Otago homes warmer, drier, healthier and more comfortable.
A 2013 Cosy Homes Symposium attracted representatives of 76 national, regional and local entities including social service providers, community groups, healthcare providers, funders, government agencies and educational institutions. From this symposium, a steering group was formed to further the jointly developed vision of "everyone lives in a warm and healthy home" with a goal of achieving this vision by 2025.
The steering group appointed a governance board, which now forms the Board of Trustees of Cosy Homes, a registered charitable trust and registered charity.
In 2016, Cosy Homes employed its first staff member, a Project Manager who coordinates healthy homes efforts across Otago, provides education, and advocates for policy change and financial resources that promote healthier, more energy efficient housing across Otago.
